Welcome to The Common Thread Mercantile! We are an independent fabric shop selling premium cotton fabric and notions for making quilts and your various cotton crafts. Our doors opened in Nitro, West Virginia on July 5, 2017.

We’re a little different than the usual fabric shop. We consign items such as jewelry, handmade soaps and candles, repurposed items and vintage furniture. There is a seating area out front for those you bring along that prefer to wait for you in a comfy chair, decorated in 1940-50’s style. On Wednesdays the kitchen vignette out there has a covered dish of goodies and a fresh pot of coffee…the vintage kind 🙂

Classes are forming. Check the Events tab at the top of the page for a calendar of upcoming classes and then call or come in to sign up.

Our first on Saturday, August 26 will be a Friends & Family Apron. Bring a child and work together to make their apron. It’s fun and great quality time. It will be an easy project, so don’t be shy about sewing skills. The instructor has lots of experience in classes for kids. You can make one too if you want for the price of an extra kit (no extra class fee)!. There will be more apron classes in the future. They are so much fun to make! They aren’t just for cooking. Use them when crafting as well…or when you are brushing the cat!

On September 8 and 11 we will do an evening class (total 6 hours across the two evenings) to make a beautiful Zen quilt from batiks. We will do a 6-hour Saturday class for it on September 9. This would be a great gift, assuming you could ever give it away!

Do you have any jelly rolls you have been waiting to put to use? Saturday, September 16 is National Jelly Roll day. Bring in your jelly roll and your machine, pick a free pattern and get to work! If you don’t have a jelly roll, buy one of ours for $30! Call us ASAP to save your spot at the table. No class fee!

Every Friday we have a free Sew Together. Bring in your machine and work on your current project or put some time to those UFO’s. We have lots of space to spread out your quilt if needed. If you don’t care to lug your heavy machine, borrow one of our reconditioned vintage Singers! In any case, parking is immediately outside of the door and there is a ramp just inside the door, so at least the logistics of bringing yours in make it much easier.

Hope to see you soon! We are located at 153 Main Avenue in Nitro, WV…just across from Diehl’s Restaurant. They have been around for over 60 years and are known for many miles around for their retro style and good country cooking. Grab lunch, and come on over!

Hours:  Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 – 5:00
